COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Development and Sociology course at Sussex equips students with a comprehensive understanding of global inequality, poverty, and social justice, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules covering topics such as sociology, colonial legacies, global challenges, development policies, and key thinkers in the field. Year two develops research skills through quantitative and qualitative social research, alongside critical approaches to development economics, social justice, and thematic options addressing issues like health, education, migration, and inequality. Students can tailor their studies with options exploring digital societies, environmental perspectives, gender and race, and practitioner skills for global justice. In the third year, students focus on advanced and specialised topics in development, sustainability, human rights, global work experience, and contemporary issues such as coloniality, racism, and ecological crises. The course culminates in an International Development Thesis and Sociology Project, allowing students to conduct independent research supported by experienced supervisors. Across all years, the program emphasizes critical thinking, practical engagement, and interdisciplinary learning, preparing graduates for careers in international development, NGOs, policy-making, and research. Students gain the knowledge, analytical skills, and hands-on experience to tackle global challenges and contribute to social and economic transformation worldwide.
