COURSE CURRICULUM

The Product Design degree at Sussex provides students with a comprehensive grounding in design principles, methods, and practices, preparing them to create innovative and user-focused products. In the first year, students develop foundational skills through modules in creative research methods, drawing, materials and processes, mathematics for design, applied technology, computer-aided visualisation, and experience prototyping. They also explore the cultural and narrative dimensions of design and participate in global design challenges, gaining practical experience and an understanding of the wider context of their work. In the second year, the focus shifts to applying design knowledge in practical and industrial contexts. Students study design for manufacture, design techniques in practice, human factors and ergonomics, interaction methods, integrated product design, and professional and managerial skills, with opportunities to explore specialised areas such as toy and game design. In the final year, students consolidate their learning with modules in business and project management, design philosophy, and the role of design in the circular economy, emphasizing sustainability and responsible practice. The year culminates in a major design project, allowing students to develop and realise their own innovative concepts, alongside a module encouraging experimentation with multisensory experiences. Graduates leave equipped with creativity, technical skills, and practical experience, ready to pursue careers in product design, innovation, and related industries.
