COURSE CURRICULUM

The Politics and Sociology course at Sussex offers students a comprehensive understanding of how societies function and the political systems that shape them. In the first year, students build a foundation through core modules covering 21st Century Sociology, British Political History, explanatory political concepts, and research skills, alongside thematic studies in sociology and politics. In the second year, students advance their knowledge with core modules in European politics, modern political thought, and social research using quantitative and qualitative methods. They also choose from a range of options exploring topics such as classical sociological theory, health across the life course, the climate crisis, education and inequality, digital societies, migration and integration, capitalism, and political systems around the world. In the third year, students focus on specialised topics and projects, engaging with contemporary issues including authoritarianism, ecological crises, coloniality and racism, digital activism, political psychology, global crises, and political change in multiple countries. The course encourages applied learning through independent study projects, sociology projects, and internship opportunities, allowing students to gain practical experience alongside academic knowledge. Graduates leave with strong analytical, research, and communication skills, as well as an in-depth understanding of social structures and political processes, preparing them for careers in government, NGOs, research, journalism, and other sectors addressing societal challenges.
