COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy course at Sussex provides a comprehensive foundation in philosophical thinking while allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests. In the first year, students engage with core modules such as Reason and Argument, Topics in Philosophy, Logic and Meaning, and Science and Religion, building essential skills in critical analysis, reasoning, and ethical reflection. In the second year, the curriculum expands to include Epistemology and Metaphysics, Philosophy and Professional Life, and a range of options including Ancient Philosophy, Early Modern Philosophy, Feminist Philosophy, Kant, Phenomenology, Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence, Philosophy of Language, and Philosophy of Mind. This breadth allows students to explore both historical and contemporary philosophical issues, as well as applied philosophy in professional and societal contexts. In the final year, students undertake a Philosophy Dissertation, developing advanced research and writing skills, while further options such as Analytical Philosophy, Modern European Philosophy, Philosophy of Art and Literature, Social Political Philosophy, Ethics, Islamic Philosophy, and Post-Kantian Philosophy enable in-depth exploration of specialised areas. Throughout the degree, students develop analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills that are highly valued in careers including policy, law, education, business, and research. The course combines rigorous academic study with opportunities for practical engagement, preparing graduates to thoughtfully address complex societal and ethical challenges.
