COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy and Sociology degree provides a comprehensive understanding of human thought, behaviour, and social structures through a blend of philosophical inquiry and sociological analysis. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation by studying key themes in both disciplines, including Reason and Argument, The Meaning of Life, 21st-Century Sociology, and Science and Religion, while exploring different perspectives and approaches to understanding society and existence. Year 2 deepens analytical and research skills through core modules in Social Research, both quantitative and qualitative, alongside a wide range of optional topics such as Ancient and Early Modern Philosophy, Feminist Philosophy, Climate Crisis and Justice, Sociology of Emotions and Mental Health, and Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence. These modules encourage students to connect philosophical theory with contemporary social issues. In Year 3, students focus on independent research through a Sociology Project or Philosophy Dissertation while exploring advanced themes such as Ethics, Post-Kantian Philosophy, Digital Activism, Capitalism and Ecological Crisis, and Coloniality and Inequality. Optional modules also cover topics like Technology and the Human, Sexualities and Intimacies, and Surveillance and Control. The course equips graduates with critical reasoning, research, and problem-solving skills, preparing them for diverse careers in policy, education, social research, law, media, and cultural sectors.
