COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy and English program at Sussex offers a comprehensive and flexible approach to exploring ideas, literature, and critical thinking. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules such as Burning to Read, Reason and Argument, The Meaning of Life, Science and Religion, and World-Making Before Globalisation, which develop analytical, interpretive, and philosophical skills. In the second and third years, students can tailor their studies through a wide range of options, allowing them to explore diverse areas such as Ancient Philosophy, Early Modern Philosophy, Epistemology and Metaphysics, Feminist Philosophy, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence, Kant, Phenomenology, and Philosophy of Language, alongside literary and creative modules. The program integrates English literature studies, examining texts across cultures, genres, and periods, and encourages engagement with contemporary issues such as AI, social justice, and climate change. Students also develop research skills through dissertations in both philosophy and literature, while participating in interdisciplinary modules, placements, and practical projects. By the end of the degree, graduates are equipped with critical, analytical, and expressive skills, capable of independent thought and creative problem-solving. The program prepares students for diverse careers in law, media, education, policy, technology, the arts, and other fields that require strong reasoning, communication, and ethical insight.
