COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music course at Sussex is designed to give students a comprehensive grounding in both the practical and theoretical aspects of music while fostering creativity and professional skills. In the first year, students build a foundation through core modules including global music cultures, practical musicianship, studio performance, arranging for songs and ensembles, and electronic music and production. In the second year, the focus broadens to musical revolutions, collaborative music projects, and industry-focused professional practice, with options such as songwriting, location recording and sound design, music for film, TV and games, and performance workshops. This combination allows students to develop technical skills, creative confidence, and an understanding of music in a cultural and professional context. In the final year, students undertake a major creative project while continuing to refine their expertise through options such as advanced performance, research projects, site-specific projects, pop soundtrack cinema, video game music, and writing the environment. Across all three years, the course encourages experimentation, collaboration, and independent thinking, enabling students to develop a personal musical identity. Graduates leave equipped with the skills, experience, and creative insight to pursue diverse careers in music performance, composition, production, creative industries, or further study, prepared to make an impact in a rapidly evolving musical landscape.
