COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music Technology course at Sussex offers students a comprehensive and practical approach to music creation, production, and performance. In the first year, students gain a strong foundation through modules in global music cultures, practical musicianship, studio recording, creative music technologies, and electronic music production, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. In the second year, students develop their technical and collaborative skills through creative technologies and live productions, a collaborative music project, and music industry and professional practice, while also selecting optional modules such as songwriting, location recording, music for film, TV and games, and performance workshops to tailor their studies to individual interests. The third year centers on the Major Creative Project, supported by core modules and optional advanced studies that allow students to explore advanced performance, research projects, histories of women in music, pop soundtrack cinema, site-specific projects, video game music, and writing and world-building. Throughout the course, students benefit from expert guidance, access to specialist facilities including recording and project studios, and opportunities to work on industry-relevant projects. Graduates leave equipped with the skills, knowledge, and creative confidence to pursue diverse careers in music production, performance, composition, sound design, live events, games music, and related creative industries, prepared to innovate and shape the future of music.
