COURSE CURRICULUM

The Journalism and Media course at Sussex equips students with a comprehensive understanding of contemporary media and the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. In the first year, students build a foundation in digital news and features writing, audiovisual journalism, and media theory, exploring the intersections of technology, society, and culture. The second year deepens practical skills and theoretical knowledge through modules in video and podcast journalism, media law and ethics, and understanding media work, while students can also choose from options that cover media history, pop culture, arts and lifestyle journalism, and digital society. In the final year, students undertake an industry project and a research-focused module, applying their expertise in real-world contexts while further tailoring their studies through options in areas such as celebrity culture, digital activism, media and conflict, AI in media, public relations, and community media. Throughout the course, Sussex emphasizes ethical practice, critical thinking, and practical experience, supported by specialist facilities including media labs, a news studio, and a podcasting studio. By combining academic study with hands-on projects, students graduate with the confidence, technical competence, and ethical awareness to pursue careers across journalism, media production, digital content creation, public relations, and creative industries, including opportunities as freelancers or media entrepreneurs.
