COURSE CURRICULUM

The Liberal Arts degree at Sussex provides a broad, interdisciplinary education that combines the arts, humanities, and social sciences while encouraging practical engagement with real-world issues. In the first year, students explore foundational themes, including modern identities, global perspectives, cultural history, and climate change, while learning creative and disruptive approaches to systems thinking. The second year builds on this foundation with modules addressing misinformation, strategic communication, future-focused thinking, decolonisation, and community engagement, alongside a range of options covering philosophy, media, popular culture, journalism, and post-colonial studies. Students develop skills in research, critical analysis, communication, and creative practice while gaining opportunities to engage with industries and communities. The third year focuses on independent and community-based projects, allowing students to apply their knowledge and skills in practical contexts. Additional options in the final year cover areas such as social media activism, environmental writing, feminism and digital culture, queer and life writing, and the origins of modernism, giving students the flexibility to tailor their studies to their interests. Throughout the course, students gain a mix of theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and creative problem-solving abilities, preparing them for careers in cultural institutions, media, advocacy, community engagement, and other fields where interdisciplinary thinking and applied skills are valued.
