COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Relations course at Sussex provides a comprehensive understanding of how global politics and power structures operate, exploring the origins and dynamics of the modern international system. In the first year, students build a foundation through core modules that examine the development of international relations, the rise of the modern international order, and key thinkers and events shaping the short twentieth century, alongside practical analysis of local and global political issues. In the second year, the focus shifts to contemporary international theory, political economy, and the study of war, security, and development, with options allowing students to tailor their learning to specific interests, including the politics of foreign policy and the impact of neoliberalism. The final year centres on independent research through a dissertation, while offering a wide range of optional modules such as decolonial movements, global health, capitalism and geopolitics, activism, and the politics of armed groups. Students gain practical experience through global work opportunities and develop advanced analytical skills, preparing them to assess complex international challenges, including conflict, development, humanitarian issues, and global governance. Graduates are equipped for careers in diplomacy, international organisations, policy-making, research, and fields requiring critical understanding of global political systems and the interplay of power, society, and economics.
