COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Development and Global Challenges course at Sussex combines rigorous academic study with practical and language-based learning, preparing students to address pressing global issues such as poverty, inequality, migration, environmental sustainability, and social justice. In the first year, students gain a foundation in development theory, policies, and global challenges, alongside exploring key thinkers and development practices, while having the option to begin language studies in Arabic, British Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, or Spanish. The second year builds on this foundation with modules in development economics, research skills, social justice, and thematic options covering gender, race, health, environmental perspectives, and international education, with continued progression in language learning. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics such as sustainable development, disasters, decolonial movements, mobilities, global inequalities, and human rights, while completing an International Development Thesis and choosing from a wide range of practical and thematic modules. Language learning continues to higher levels, enhancing intercultural communication and global awareness. Across all years, students have the opportunity to tailor their studies to their interests, combining core knowledge with interdisciplinary and applied learning. Graduates leave with the analytical, practical, and linguistic skills necessary for careers in international development, policy, advocacy, and related fields, equipped to make meaningful contributions to social and environmental justice worldwide.
