COURSE CURRICULUM

Studying History at Sussex offers a broad and flexible approach, allowing students to explore global and local histories from multiple perspectives. In the first year, students develop a foundation in historical thinking through modules such as the Early Modern World, Historical Controversy, History of Now, and Making of the Modern World. In the second year, the focus expands to global and public history, including Global History from the Global South, Historical Consultancy, and Engaged Public History, alongside a wide range of options covering topics such as slavery, revolutions, empires, and social movements across different continents and eras. This allows students to tailor their learning to specific interests, from the Asia-Pacific in the 19th century to Europe and the Americas in the 20th century. In the final year, students complete a dissertation while developing practical skills in producing history, supported by options that examine themes including Britain during the Second World War, African American freedom struggles, the US in the Middle East, queer archives, and histories of fashion, childhood, and migration. Throughout the course, students gain experience in research, critical analysis, and public engagement, developing the ability to communicate historical knowledge in innovative ways. Graduates leave equipped for careers in media, heritage, education, policy, and other fields requiring strong analytical, research, and communication skills.
