COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and Sociology course at Sussex combines historical inquiry with sociological analysis, enabling students to explore society, culture, and human behaviour across time and place. In the first year, students build a foundation through core modules such as 21st-Century Sociology, Early Modern World, Making of the Modern World, and Themes and Perspectives, learning to understand social structures, historical developments, and methodological approaches. In the second year, students develop practical research skills through modules in social research, historical consultancy, and engaged public history, alongside options covering areas like migration, globalisation, inequality, human rights, and sociological theory. These modules allow students to tailor their studies to their interests while exploring the intersection of social and historical phenomena. In the final year, students complete a dissertation and undertake advanced options in areas including contemporary social theory, alternative societies, politics of race, ecology, human rights, and intersections of sexuality, identity, and culture. Throughout the course, students engage with archival resources, case studies, and interdisciplinary projects, developing analytical, research, and critical thinking skills. By the end of the program, graduates are equipped to interpret social change, understand complex societal issues, and apply historical and sociological perspectives in careers spanning research, policy, education, media, and community engagement.
