COURSE CURRICULUM

Studying History and Politics at Sussex provides a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between historical events and contemporary political systems. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through modules such as British Political History, Early Modern World, Explanatory Concepts in Political Science, Foundations of Politics, Making of the Modern World, and Research Skills and Methodology. In the second year, the focus broadens to European Politics, Modern Political Thought, and Historical Consultancy, alongside options exploring global and regional histories and politics, such as the Enlightenment, Indian Rebellion, and Holocaust, as well as modules on governance in countries including France, India, Turkey, and the USA. Students also engage with applied political study through modules like Communicating Politics. In the third year, students undertake a dissertation and the Producing History module, while choosing from a wide range of options that cover historical, political, and societal topics, including democracy, feminism, political psychology, political corruption, governance, and international relations. This combination of core and optional modules allows students to tailor their studies to their interests while developing analytical, research, and communication skills. Graduates leave equipped to understand complex political and historical dynamics, pursue advanced research, and engage in careers in policy, government, international organisations, journalism, and the broader public or private sectors where historical insight informs decision-making.
