COURSE CURRICULUM
The History and Philosophy course at Sussex offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach, combining historical study with philosophical inquiry. In the first year, students build a strong foundation with modules exploring the Early Modern World, Making of the Modern World, Reason and Argument, The Meaning of Life, and Science and Religion. In the second year, students continue with core modules such as Historical Consultancy and Engaged Public History while selecting from a range of options that broaden their understanding of both history and philosophy. These include topics like Ancient Philosophy, Early Modern Philosophy, Feminist Philosophy, Epistemology and Metaphysics, as well as historical subjects such as the Enlightenment, Indian Rebellion, Holocaust, and global revolutions. The third year focuses on independent research through the Dissertation and Philosophy Dissertation, while students can also choose from advanced modules in history and philosophy, including Analytic Philosophy, Modern European Philosophy, Philosophy of Art and Literature, Ethics, Post-Kantian Philosophy, and Islamic Philosophy. Alongside these, students can study historical topics such as Britain and the Second World War, the African-American Freedom Struggle, post-rave Britain, and global conflicts. Through this integrated approach, students develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and the ability to communicate complex ideas. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in academia, media, policy, heritage, and other fields requiring interdisciplinary knowledge and practical skills.
