COURSE CURRICULUM

The Global History and International Relations degree at Sussex offers a rigorous and flexible program that combines historical and political analysis to explore the complex dynamics shaping the modern world. In the first year, students gain a foundation in early modern and modern global history alongside introductory international relations, examining the rise of the modern international order, classical thinkers, and major historical developments of the twentieth century. In the second year, the focus shifts to contemporary international theory, historical consultancy, and international political economy, with options allowing students to study specific global regions, revolutions, migrations, and conflicts. Core modules and electives enable students to explore a wide array of topics, from slavery in English America and the Enlightenment, to neoliberalism, security, and the liberal world order. The final year allows students to consolidate their learning through a dissertation and the Producing History module, while a broad range of options provides the opportunity to examine issues such as the politics of armed groups, genocide, global health, migration, colonialism, and cultural history. Throughout the course, students develop analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, while engaging with real-world challenges in global politics and history. Graduates leave with the knowledge, adaptability, and insight needed for careers in international policy, diplomacy, research, development, and other globally-focused fields.
