COURSE CURRICULUM

The Anthropology and History course at Sussex provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human societies and historical developments, blending anthropological perspectives with historical inquiry. In the first year, students explore foundational concepts through modules such as Early Modern World, Making Sense of Humanity, and Anthropology of Capitalism, developing critical thinking and analytical skills while examining the shaping of the modern world and individual and collective identities. In the second year, students build on this foundation with modules in Ethnographic Research Methods, Historical Consultancy, and Religion and Ritual, alongside a wide range of options that allow deeper engagement with global and historical case studies, including revolutions, colonial histories, social movements, and cultural transformations. This combination encourages students to analyze the intersections between culture, society, and historical processes. In the final year, students undertake a dissertation and advanced modules such as Producing History, while choosing from a diverse array of options covering topics like human rights, geopolitics, work and labour, and cultural and environmental anthropology. The course emphasizes research skills, interdisciplinary perspectives, and real-world applications, preparing graduates for careers in areas such as international research, heritage, policy, journalism, and development, where a nuanced understanding of history, culture, and social dynamics is essential for informed engagement and decision-making.
