COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography program at Sussex provides students with a solid foundation in understanding the interactions between human and natural environments while developing the skills needed to address complex global challenges. In the first year, students study core topics such as human geographies, environmental management, sustainable development, urban mobility, and quantitative and analytical skills, giving them the essential tools to become confident geographers. In the second year, the focus shifts to methodological and thematic areas, including human geography methods, social geographies, climate change, global economic transformations, migration, development, and field-based learning both locally in Southeast England and internationally. This combination of theoretical and practical experiences allows students to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts. In the final year, students complete a substantial geography thesis while having the flexibility to choose from options covering sustainability policy, disasters and development, global finance, mobilities, race and inequality, food security, and migration. Throughout the course, fieldwork, data analysis, and research-based projects are emphasized, equipping students with practical, analytical, and transferable skills. Graduates leave the program ready for careers in environmental research, policy, international development, urban planning, and other fields that require a deep understanding of spatial, social, and environmental processes and the ability to tackle global challenges.
