COURSE CURRICULUM

Studying Geography with a language at Sussex provides a comprehensive understanding of how human societies interact with the natural world, while developing language skills that enhance global career prospects. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in human and environmental geography, learning about cities, mobility, environmental management, and quantitative and analytical skills, while beginning a language of their choice from options including Arabic, British Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. The second year develops this foundation with modules on global economic change, migration, social geographies, and environmental perspectives, alongside intermediate or advanced language study and opportunities for overseas or local fieldwork, such as the Geography Overseas Field Class and the Southeast England Field Class. In the final year, students undertake a Geography Thesis while further advancing their language proficiency and exploring options such as sustainable development, decolonial movements, global work experience, and studies in global inequalities, race, migration, and food security. The combination of geography and language study allows students to engage critically with complex global issues, acquire practical field, analytical, and mapping skills, and gain cultural and linguistic expertise. Graduates leave equipped for careers in international development, environmental management, policy, research, and other fields requiring interdisciplinary knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and global awareness.
