COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography and International Relations course at Sussex provides an in-depth understanding of the interconnections between people, places, politics, and global systems. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules that introduce human geographies, international relations, and the historical development of the modern international order, alongside quantitative and analytical skills. The curriculum emphasizes how cities, mobilities, and global events shape contemporary life. In the second year, students engage with advanced concepts including contemporary international theory, international political economy, global migration, and environmental perspectives on development. Fieldwork opportunities, both locally in Southeast England and abroad, allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts while exploring issues such as security, social geographies, and the politics of foreign policy. In the final year, students select from a wide range of specialized modules covering sustainable development, decolonial movements, global inequalities, geopolitics, trade, and human rights, among others. Throughout the course, students develop practical skills in data analysis, research, and critical evaluation while gaining insight into the political, economic, and environmental forces shaping the world. Graduates leave prepared for careers in international policy, development, environmental management, humanitarian work, and related fields, equipped with analytical, research, and problem-solving skills to address complex global challenges.
