COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental and Human Geography course at Sussex provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human-environment interactions, integrating geographical and anthropological perspectives to address global challenges such as migration, urbanisation, climate change, and sustainable development. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules covering human geographies, cities and mobilities, anthropology, and analytical and quantitative geography skills. In the second year, students explore global economic change, migration, religion, and ethnographic research methods while having the opportunity to select from a range of options including environmental perspectives on development, social geographies, overseas fieldwork, and visual anthropology, allowing them to tailor their studies to their interests. In the final year, students further specialise through advanced options covering sustainable development, human rights, global inequalities, disaster and environmental management, political ecology, global food security, and anthropological perspectives on geopolitics and diplomacy. The course includes practical fieldwork both locally and internationally, helping students apply theoretical learning to real-world contexts. Throughout the degree, students develop critical thinking, cultural awareness, research skills, and interdisciplinary understanding, preparing them for careers in environmental research, urban and regional planning, international development, cultural heritage, policy-making, and other sectors where an in-depth knowledge of human-environment interactions and global issues is essential.
