COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film and Media course at Sussex provides students with a comprehensive education in film, television, and screen media, combining creative practice with theoretical understanding. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules covering factual production, screen visualisation, screenwriting, film art, global cinema, and platform storytelling. These modules develop storytelling, analytical, and technical skills while introducing students to a range of cinematic traditions and media formats. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge with core modules in film production, industry management, project development, and film finance, exhibition, and distribution, while also selecting from optional modules such as factual storytelling, location recording and sound design, motion design, animation, directing screen performance, and podcasting. The third year focuses on applied, project-based learning through the Film and TV Project, film post-production, and video essays, allowing students to integrate creative and research skills. A wide range of optional modules enables exploration of specialized topics, including cinema and social change, body politics, migration, sexuality, Hollywood industry, and adaptation for transmedia. Through this combination of theory, practice, and optional study, students gain the technical expertise, critical understanding, and creative skills necessary to succeed in film, television, and related media industries.
