COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film Studies program at Sussex provides a comprehensive exploration of cinema, its cultural impact, and its global significance. In the first year, students build a strong foundation with core modules including Analysing Film: Forms and Contexts, European Cinema, Analysing Film: Authorship and Genre, and Global Cinema, developing critical understanding of film history, genres, and authorship. In the second year, core modules such as Debates in Screen Documentary, Exploring Local Film Cultures, and British Cinema deepen students’ analytical skills while offering insight into diverse cinematic traditions. Alongside these, a wide range of options allows students to tailor their studies to individual interests, including modules on adaptation, TV and film musicals, Chinese, Indian, and Latin American cinema, documentary video, cinema and climate, and screenwriting. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through a Film Studies Dissertation while choosing from advanced options such as American Teen Cinema, Cinema and Migration, Pop Soundtrack Cinema, Race and Ethnicity in Popular Cinema, Cinema and Sexualities, Film and Revolution, Hollywood Industry and Imaginary, and Viewing Women. The program emphasizes both theoretical analysis and practical understanding of film’s social, cultural, and technological dimensions, equipping students with critical, creative, and research skills. Graduates emerge as versatile, analytical, and culturally literate thinkers, prepared for careers in film, media, cultural industries, and related fields.
