COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in English Language and Linguistics at Sussex offers a structured and comprehensive pathway for students to develop expertise in language and communication. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules such as Language and Interaction, Language Myths, How Language Works, and Writing in Action, introducing them to key concepts and practical applications. In the second year, students deepen their understanding with modules like Language for Life, Representing Realities, and Language and Society, while also having the opportunity to select from options such as From Papyrus to Pixel, History of English, and Philosophy of Language, allowing them to tailor their studies to personal interests. The third year emphasizes independent research through a Dissertation in English Language and a range of optional modules including Emerging Topics in Linguistics, Just Semantics, Language, Gender and Sexuality, Linguistic Consultancy, Child Language Acquisition, and Understanding Political Language. Throughout the degree, students are encouraged to apply their knowledge to real-world contexts, develop critical thinking, and enhance their practical skills in communication, analysis, and research. By the time they graduate, students are well-prepared for diverse careers in fields such as digital media, forensic linguistics, education, policy, and international communication, equipped with both theoretical understanding and practical experience.
