COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in English Language and Linguistics with TESOL provides a strong foundation in language study, communication, and teaching English to speakers of other languages. In Year 1, students explore key linguistic concepts through modules such as From Sounds to Words and From Words to Interaction, alongside Global Humanities and Introduction to TESOL – Theory and Methodology, complemented by hands-on TESOL Teaching Practice. Optional modules like Logic and Meaning or Global Humanities 2 allow students to expand their intellectual perspectives. In Year 2, the focus shifts to more advanced areas, including Approaches to Discourse, Great Ideas about Language, Sociolinguistics, and TESOL Theory and Methodology 2, supported by a second stage of teaching practice. Students can further specialise through options like English in the United States, Phonetics and Phonology, and Language in the Workplace. In the final year, academic independence is emphasised through a Research Proposal and Dissertation in English Language, supported by specialist modules such as History of English, Topics in Linguistics, Forensic Linguistics, and Child Language Acquisition. Throughout the course, students gain both theoretical insight and practical teaching experience, preparing them for global careers in language education, communication, linguistics research, and related professional fields.
