COURSE CURRICULUM

The Media and Literature program at Sussex explores the interplay between literature, media, culture, and society, offering students a deep understanding of how stories and media shape social and cultural life. From the first year, students build a solid foundation through modules that examine contemporary media, literature, and critical approaches, while developing analytical and creative skills. In the second year, core modules such as News, Politics and Power, alongside options in literature, digital culture, and media research, allow students to tailor their studies and explore topics including post-colonial texts, algorithmic society, and contemporary literature. The program encourages interdisciplinary study, integrating literary analysis with media literacy and cultural critique. In the final year, students select advanced options that reflect their interests, covering areas such as celebrity and media, global communication, feminism and digital culture, media and climate crisis, and alternative cultures. Dissertation preparation and independent research provide practical experience in producing original work, while placements and engagement with local and global media contexts foster real-world skills. Throughout the course, students benefit from a supportive academic community, experiential learning opportunities, and exposure to critical debates, leaving them well-prepared for careers in media, publishing, communications, cultural industries, and research, equipped with strong analytical, creative, and practical expertise.
