COURSE CURRICULUM

The History and English program at Sussex offers a rich and interdisciplinary approach, combining the study of historical events with literary and cultural analysis to equip students with critical, analytical, and creative skills. In History, students engage with a wide range of topics spanning global, regional, and thematic perspectives, from early modern empires and the Atlantic world to modern revolutions, conflicts, and social movements. Core modules cover historical research, public history, and historical consultancy, while options allow students to explore areas such as slavery in English America, the Enlightenment, the Holocaust, and decolonial histories. Students also undertake a dissertation project to develop independent research skills and in-depth knowledge in a chosen area. In English, students examine literature across cultures, genres, and periods, exploring texts from Shakespeare to contemporary works, and connecting their studies to pressing global issues such as social justice, climate change, and cultural identity. Elective modules in both disciplines provide flexibility to tailor the course to individual interests, including subjects such as postcolonial literature, African-American history, gender studies, and creative writing. By combining rigorous academic study with practical research and engagement opportunities, the program develops versatile graduates capable of interpreting, analyzing, and communicating complex ideas, while applying historical and literary insight to contemporary societal challenges.
