COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing and English program at Sussex offers an immersive and flexible curriculum designed to develop both creative and analytical skills. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through core modules such as Acts of Writing, Burning to Read, Critical Approaches, Radical Theory, Spring Writing Workshop, and Writing in Action, which introduce key concepts in literature, critical thinking, and practical writing. Year 2 expands these skills with advanced workshops, including Advanced Writing Workshop: Process and Technique, From Editing to Publishing: Gift Economies and Going Pro, and Language for Life, while a wide range of optional modules allows students to explore diverse areas such as fiction, poetry, screenwriting, journalism, postcolonial texts, literature and philosophy, and media studies. These options help students tailor their learning to personal interests and gain practical experience. In Year 3, the Creative Writing Project and Dissertation modules enable independent, in-depth study, while further options allow exploration of specialized topics such as posthuman and premodern literature, long-form journalism, writing for video games, race and gender studies, psychoanalysis and literature, and writing in environmental and speculative contexts. Across all three years, the program balances creativity with critical engagement, preparing graduates for careers in media, publishing, education, creative industries, and beyond, equipping them with strong writing, analytical, and professional skills.
