COURSE CURRICULUM

The Economics degree at Sussex provides a comprehensive grounding in economic theory, quantitative methods, and policy analysis, equipping students to understand and address issues of growth, inequality, and real-world economic challenges. In the first year, students study foundational topics including contemporary economic issues, microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, and mathematics for finance and economics, building the essential analytical skills for higher-level study. The second year develops this foundation with intermediate modules in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics, alongside options such as applied statistics, data coding and visualisation, environmental economics, and global economic history, allowing students to tailor their degree to their interests. In the final year, students explore advanced topics including behavioural economics, applied econometrics, climate change economics, international trade, labour economics, monetary theory, and industrial organisation, while also completing an applied economics dissertation. Additional options cover specialised areas such as the economics of education, sports, crime, European integration, development, and financial economics. The course encourages interdisciplinary learning through electives from other subjects and offers opportunities for studying abroad or undertaking a professional placement year. By combining theoretical understanding with practical quantitative and analytical skills, graduates are well prepared for careers in banking, finance, government, private sector organisations, and international institutions, capable of making informed, evidence-based economic decisions.
