COURSE CURRICULUM

The Economics and International Development course at Sussex offers a comprehensive three-year program that combines economic theory with a focus on global development issues. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core modules in economics, mathematics for finance and economics, macroeconomics and microeconomics, development policies and politics, colonialism and its afterlives, global challenges and innovations, and key thinkers in development. The second year develops this foundation with advanced economic study, critical approaches to development economics, social justice, and statistics, alongside options in areas such as environmental economics, finance for development, health, poverty and inequality, gender, global economic history, and practitioner skills for global justice, allowing students to tailor their learning to their interests. In the third year, students focus on research and applied projects, completing an International Development Thesis while choosing from a broad range of options covering sustainable development, climate change economics, behavioural economics, international trade, industrial organization, global food security, political ecology, economic policy, development tools and skills, humanitarianism, migration, and global inequalities. The program emphasizes critical thinking, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and practical problem-solving, preparing graduates for careers in international development, economic policy, research, consultancy, non-governmental organizations, and related fields that require a deep understanding of global economic and social challenges.
