COURSE CURRICULUM

The Drama and Language course at Sussex combines rigorous training in theatre practice with the opportunity to study a language, providing students with both creative and intercultural skills. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules such as Staging Plays, Theatre and Ideas, Making Performance, and Theatre at Work, while having the option to begin a language from a wide selection including Arabic, British Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. Year two develops students’ creative and analytical abilities through core modules like Contemporary Performance Project and Critical Theory and Performance, along with the choice between Performing Practices or Writing for Theatre, and continued language study at an intermediate or advanced level. In the final year, students gain professional experience and apply their learning through a Professional Work Experience module, a Drama Dissertation, and participation in the Final-Year Performance Festival. Throughout the course, students can continue language study at advanced levels, enabling them to combine practical theatre skills with linguistic and intercultural competence. Sussex’s approach encourages collaboration, creativity, and professional development, preparing graduates to work in theatre, arts education, and related cultural sectors while equipping them with a distinctive combination of practical expertise, critical understanding, and global communication skills that enhance employability and creative versatility.
