COURSE CURRICULUM

The Arts and Humanities course at Sussex equips students with a strong foundation in theatre, literature, film, and performance, preparing them for careers in the cultural industries. In the first year, students study core modules such as Staging Plays, Theatre and Ideas, Making Performance, and Theatre at Work, providing essential knowledge and skills in both theory and practice. The second year builds on this foundation with modules like Contemporary Performance Project and Critical Theory and Performance, while students can also choose from a wide range of options, including Acting, Writing Fiction, Film Musicals, Pop Culture, Media and Sustainability, and more, allowing them to tailor their learning to their interests. In the final year, students undertake professional work experience and produce a Drama Dissertation or participate in the Final-Year Performance Festival, further developing practical skills and industry readiness. Additional options include American Teen Cinema, Pop Soundtrack Cinema, Histories of Women in Music, Queer Fictions, Video Games: Writing and World-Building, Feminism and Digital Culture, and Social Media, Activism and Advocacy. The course emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, combining humanities education with hands-on artistic practice, and offers opportunities to explore theatre, literature, film, music, and digital culture. Graduates leave with the confidence, versatility, and professional skills needed to pursue careers in creative, cultural, and media sectors.
