COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing degree at Sussex provides students with a rigorous and immersive experience in imaginative, critical, and professional writing. In Year 1, students build foundational skills through modules such as Acts of Writing, Autumn and Spring Writing Workshops, Critical Approaches, Radical Theory, and Writing in Action, learning to express ideas creatively while engaging with critical perspectives. Year 2 develops advanced writing and professional skills with modules including Advanced Writing Workshop: Process and Technique, From Editing to Publishing: Gift Economies and Going Pro, alongside a broad range of optional modules that allow exploration of fiction, poetry, screenwriting, journalism, media, and communication design. Students gain hands-on experience and practical insight into diverse forms and industries. In Year 3, the Creative Writing Project serves as a capstone, enabling students to develop substantial original work under expert guidance. A wide selection of optional modules encourages specialisation in areas such as long-form journalism, video game writing and world-building, writing on race, gender, and the environment, serial fiction, and imaginative explorations of outer space. Throughout the degree, students engage critically and creatively, honing their technical skills, narrative abilities, and analytical understanding. Graduates leave equipped for careers in creative industries, media, publishing, education, and beyond, with strong storytelling, writing, and professional competencies.
