COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in Climate Justice at Sussex equips students to understand and address the social, political, and economic dimensions of climate change, focusing on equity, activism, and sustainable development. In the first year, students gain a foundation in climate change, development policies, colonial legacies, environmental management, and global challenges, providing an interdisciplinary perspective on the causes and impacts of climate crises. In the second year, the course explores global climate change, social justice, development economics, climate policy, and activism, alongside optional modules such as gender, race and sexuality, health and inequality, and international education, allowing students to tailor their learning to specific interests. The final year deepens understanding through advanced sustainable development, political ecology, environmental justice, and a dissertation project, complemented by a range of options covering environmental politics, protests, global health, development, and decolonial movements. The program emphasizes practical engagement and critical thinking, with opportunities for fieldwork, global work experience, and hands-on projects that develop problem-solving, research, and advocacy skills. Students collaborate with peers and external organizations to design and communicate effective solutions to climate challenges. Graduates are prepared to influence policy, engage in activism, work with NGOs, or contribute to sustainable development initiatives, equipping them to create meaningful change in addressing the climate crisis and promoting climate justice worldwide.
