COURSE CURRICULUM

The Childhood and Youth Studies degree provides a comprehensive and progressive understanding of children’s development, rights, and wellbeing from historical, social and global perspectives. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as Historical Childhoods: Antiquity to the Modern Day and Introduction to Childhood and Youth, which explore how conceptions of childhood have evolved. They also study Children and Young People in Society and Inclusive Practices, gaining insight into professional skills and inclusive education. Year 2 deepens understanding with modules on Children’s Rights and Legal Frameworks and Parents and Families, examining family dynamics and the laws shaping children’s lives. Students also engage in research training and explore key areas like health and wellbeing while linking theory to practice in educational contexts. In Year 3, students apply their learning to more specialised topics, such as Digital Childhoods, Therapeutic Work with Children and Young People, and Global Childhoods, developing practical and analytical expertise for real-world challenges. The Research Minded Project encourages independent inquiry and critical reflection. Through this structured progression, students gain the skills and knowledge needed for careers supporting, educating and advocating for children and young people in social, educational and community-based settings.
