COURSE CURRICULUM

The Visual Culture and Film program at Sussex offers a comprehensive exploration of how art and cinema shape society, culture, and identity. In the first year, students build a solid foundation through core modules covering film analysis, European and global cinema, and the ways art tells stories and influences perception. Year two expands this knowledge with both theoretical and practical experiences, including an international study trip exploring art and the city, alongside modules on screen documentary, critical text analysis, and cinema from diverse regions such as Britain, China, India, and Latin America. Students also study the intersections of art, material culture, and historical contexts, examining movements from modernism to after modern art. In the third year, students undertake a final exhibition project, synthesizing their practical and critical skills, while choosing from a broad range of options to tailor their learning. These include studies in photography, commemorative art, material culture, representation of women, contemporary and historical cinema, and the politics of art and film. Across the course, students engage with both historical and contemporary practices, gaining analytical and creative skills, visual literacy, and interpretive expertise. The program equips graduates with the knowledge and practical experience needed for careers in arts, cultural industries, media, heritage, and related creative sectors.
