COURSE CURRICULUM

The Anthropology BSc at Sussex provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human societies, cultures, and behaviours across the globe. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules such as Making Sense of Humanity, Practising Anthropology, The Anthropological Imagination, Anthropology of Capitalism, Care and the Environment, The Anthropology of Kinship and Relatedness, and Worlds and Selves. These courses introduce key concepts, methods, and frameworks for analysing social and cultural phenomena. In the second year, students deepen their understanding through Ethnographic Research Methods, Key Debates in Contemporary Anthropology, Religion, Ritual and Global Transformation, and Democracy, Dictators, Resistance and Revolt, while also selecting options such as Cities and Urban Lives, Culture and Representation, Ethnographic Field Research, and Visual Anthropology to tailor their studies to their interests. In the final year, students focus on advanced topics and independent research, completing the Anthropology Thesis alongside options including Death, Dying and the Corpse, Human Rights, Re-Thinking the World (Dis)Order, Slavery, Emancipation and Legacies, Development, Business and Corporate Social Responsibility, Political Ecology and Environmental Justice, Race, Ethnicity and Identity, and Understanding Contemporary India. The program equips graduates with critical thinking, research, and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in NGOs, global development, media, journalism, research, and other sectors that require an in-depth understanding of human societies and contemporary global challenges.
