COURSE CURRICULUM

The Anthropology and Language program at Sussex provides an integrated study of anthropology alongside a chosen language, equipping students with both cultural insight and linguistic competence. In the first year, students build a foundation in anthropological theory and practice through modules such as Making Sense of Humanity, Practising Anthropology, and The Anthropological Imagination, while exploring core topics like capitalism, care, kinship, and the self. Language study begins at a suitable level, from beginners to intermediate, with options including Arabic, British Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish, as well as professional language pathways. In the second year, students advance their anthropological knowledge through modules such as Ethnographic Research Methods, Key Debates in Contemporary Anthropology, Religion, Ritual and Global Transformation, and Democracy, Dictators, Resistance and Revolt, alongside further language study at higher levels. Optional modules expand learning in areas such as urban life, culture, visual anthropology, and ethnographic field research. The final year allows students to pursue advanced language proficiency and specialised anthropological options, including topics on human rights, geopolitics, death, slavery, race, and identity, while completing an independent Anthropology Thesis. This combination of anthropology and language study prepares graduates for careers in international development, research, education, diplomacy, and other global roles, fostering cross-cultural understanding and practical skills for a multicultural world.
