COURSE CURRICULUM

The Anthropology and International Development program at Sussex provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding global cultures, societies, and development challenges. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through core modules exploring key anthropological concepts, the anthropological imagination, and global challenges, alongside studies of colonial legacies, capitalism, care, and development policies. In the second year, students develop advanced research and analytical skills with modules in ethnographic methods, development economics, social justice, and global transformations in religion and ritual, complemented by options such as health, poverty and inequality, gender, race and sexuality, and environmental perspectives on development. The third year allows students to specialise and broaden their knowledge with a wide range of options, including sustainable development, decolonial movements, human rights, global food security, political ecology, and visualising war. Students also engage in independent research projects, completing an Anthropology or International Development thesis while applying theory to real-world challenges. The curriculum emphasises ethical awareness, critical thinking, and practical skills for analysing complex global issues. Graduates leave with the expertise to pursue careers in international development, NGOs, research, policy, and other sectors addressing global social, economic, and environmental challenges, equipped to make meaningful contributions in diverse cultural and professional contexts.
