COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA International Relations course offers an advanced, in-depth exploration of the critical issues and global challenges shaping international affairs today. It begins with Applied International Relations Theory, which introduces key theoretical frameworks used to understand international politics and global interactions. Intelligence and International Security examines how intelligence is produced and used to maintain state and international safety, while also addressing contemporary security threats. Global Health Security focuses on global health crises and the political responses to pandemics and disease control. Global Migration and Ethnicity investigates international migration trends, refugee movements, border control policies, and the role of ethnicity and identity in shaping global discourse. Global Environmental Security addresses the complex relationship between the environment, sustainability, and global political structures, especially in the face of climate change. The Ideology and Populism module looks at the global rise of populist movements and how ideological shifts affect both domestic and international policies. The Principles of Research module equips students with the skills to design and execute high-quality research projects, including both qualitative and quantitative methods. This prepares students for the capstone projects: Independent Project A, a dissertation that enables them to undertake original research in a self-chosen area of international relations, and Independent Project B, a professional placement that allows practical application of their learning in a real-world setting. Placements may involve working with government departments, international organisations, research institutions, or policy think tanks, offering valuable exposure to the field. This course is ideal for those seeking careers in diplomacy, international organisations, policy research, global NGOs, or further academic study. Through a strong combination of theoretical insight, applied knowledge, and professional experience, the program equips students with the tools and perspectives required to understand and engage with the ever-evolving landscape of global affairs.
