COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Criminology course provides a comprehensive exploration of key contemporary issues in the study of crime, social deviance, and justice. It begins with Theories of Crime and Social Deviance, where students examine the roots and explanations of criminal behaviour through classical and modern criminological perspectives. This module lays the theoretical foundation for understanding how society defines, responds to, and manages deviance and crime. The Criminal Exploitation, Group Offending and Modern Slavery module offers a focused investigation into emerging forms of organised and exploitative crime, such as county lines, human trafficking, and gang activity. Students gain insight into how these crimes operate and the challenges they pose for law enforcement and social policy. The course also emphasises collaborative approaches to safety through the Partnerships for Criminal Justice and Community Safety module. Here, students explore multi-agency responses to crime and public protection, evaluating the effectiveness of partnerships across sectors including policing, health, and local authorities. In Victims and the Criminal Justice System, students focus on the role of victims, their experiences, rights, and how justice systems respond to them, including the psychological, social, and legal dimensions of victimhood. To enhance both academic and professional development, students undertake two major projects. The Independent Project A: Dissertation allows in-depth research into a criminological issue of personal interest, applying theory and critical thinking. The Independent Project B: Placement provides practical, real-world experience within a criminal justice or community safety setting, helping students bridge theory and practice. This dual project structure ensures that graduates are equipped with both research skills and applied knowledge, preparing them for careers in policy, research, law enforcement, or community-based roles. With a strong emphasis on critical thinking, contemporary relevance, and professional preparation, this course offers a rounded and practical understanding of the complexities of modern criminology.
