COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Radiotherapy and Oncology course provides a structured and progressive understanding of cancer care, combining academic knowledge with essential clinical practice. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundational principles of cancer through modules such as Foundations of Cancer and Holistic Approaches to Cancer Care, which provide an understanding of disease mechanisms and the importance of person-centred support. Students also study Physics and Technology in Cancer Care, which develops their knowledge of the scientific and technological basis of radiotherapy. Practical skills are introduced through Radiotherapy Practice 1, offering initial hands-on clinical experience. In the second year, the curriculum builds upon this foundation by exploring the Principles of Cancer, expanding students’ understanding of cancer pathology and treatment approaches. Radiotherapy Planning and Advances in Technology focuses on developing planning skills for accurate treatment delivery, supported by current technological innovations. The Research Methods for Contemporary Healthcare module equips students with the analytical tools needed to evaluate evidence-based practice. Radiotherapy Practice 2 further develops clinical competence and decision-making in patient care within real NHS settings. The final year deepens students’ professional development through a Research Project, where they explore a topic relevant to radiotherapy and oncology. Integrated Cancer Care examines multidisciplinary and holistic approaches to treatment, while Coaching and Leadership for Radiographers prepares students to take on leadership roles in clinical environments. Radiotherapy Practice 3 ensures students demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of radiotherapy practice, ready for professional registration. Throughout the program, students develop the technical knowledge, clinical expertise, and professional behaviours required for a career as a Therapeutic Radiographer. The course blends theory and practice to prepare students for a rapidly advancing healthcare environment and supports them in becoming compassionate, confident, and competent practitioners upon graduation.
