COURSE CURRICULUM

The Psychology and Sociology degree offers students a comprehensive understanding of individual behaviour and wider social systems through a carefully structured three-year program. In Year 1, students are introduced to the foundations of biological, cognitive, social, and developmental psychology alongside psychological research methods and skills. These core areas are complemented by sociological modules such as Sociological Imagination and Social Change, offering early insight into the structures, patterns, and issues shaping society. Requisite modules such as Policy and Politics, Migration and Ethnicity, and Introduction to Criminology deepen the sociological context and show how societal issues influence psychological development and behaviour. In Year 2, the program advances with focused modules in biological and cognitive psychology, social and developmental psychology, and research methodologies—both qualitative and quantitative. At the same time, sociological learning continues through modules like Social Theory, which examines major theoretical perspectives, and optional topics such as Globalisation, Medical Sociology, The World of Work, and Racialisation, Racism and Resistance. These modules broaden the understanding of social systems and their implications on identity, inequality, and resistance within global and local contexts.Year 3 brings deeper psychological exploration through Abnormal Psychology, Individual Differences, and an independent Psychology Project. Optional modules in Gender and Sexuality, Mental Health Policy and Practice, and Technology and Material Civilisation allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests. The final year encourages critical engagement with interdisciplinary knowledge and real-world application, preparing students for diverse career paths. This degree equips students with analytical, research, and communication skills, along with the ability to critically assess the relationship between the individual and society. Through the integration of psychology and sociology, graduates gain a unique perspective that is valuable for roles in health and social care, education, public policy, research, and beyond.
