COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Psychology and Counselling degree is structured over three years and provides a comprehensive understanding of core psychological principles alongside essential counselling knowledge and skills. In Year 1, students are introduced to foundational areas such as biological and cognitive psychology, social and developmental psychology, and research methods. This year also includes a strong counselling component, covering counselling theory, professional perspectives, and the development of counselling skills, self-awareness, and reflective practice, laying the groundwork for personal and professional growth. Year 2 builds on this foundation by exploring more advanced content in biological and cognitive psychology and social and developmental psychology. Students also receive rigorous training in both quantitative data analysis and qualitative research methods, equipping them with the tools necessary for empirical inquiry. Counselling modules in the second year focus on humanistic and psychodynamic perspectives, offering insights into different therapeutic approaches and broadening students’ understanding of how theory informs practice. In the final year, students delve into more complex psychological topics such as abnormal psychology and individual differences while conducting an independent research project, which allows them to explore a specific area of interest in depth. The counselling component in Year 3 introduces Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and the application of counselling skills in a professional context. This year emphasizes integration of theory and practice, helping students prepare for further study or careers in counselling and related fields. The course combines theoretical depth, practical counselling skill development, and strong research training, offering a well-rounded preparation for those aiming to enter postgraduate clinical or counselling programs, or careers across healthcare, education, and social services.
