COURSE CURRICULUM

The Midwifery degree at the University of Suffolk is structured over three years, combining academic study with practical training to prepare students for professional practice as registered midwives. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamental aspects of midwifery through modules such as Developing the Student Midwife, which lays the foundation for professional development, and Anatomy and Physiology in Midwifery, which builds essential knowledge of the human body. The Continuum of Midwifery Care module explores care across the pregnancy journey, while Care of the Newborn Infant and Infant Feeding focuses on postnatal support. Practical learning is introduced early through Skills for Midwifery Practice 1, providing hands-on training in simulated environments. In the second year, students deepen their understanding of women’s health and complex care needs. The Women’s Lives module examines social, cultural, and psychological influences on health. Modules such as Pre-existing and Antenatal Additional Care and Labour, Birth and Postnatal Additional Care address care for women with additional needs during pregnancy and childbirth. Research Methods for Midwifery introduces students to evidence-based practice. Skills for Midwifery Practice 2 continues to develop clinical proficiency in preparation for placement experiences. In the final year, students focus on refining their professional practice and advancing their academic abilities. Optimising Normal Physiological Processes revisits core midwifery practices with an emphasis on supporting normal birth. The Future Midwife module prepares students for their transition into qualified roles. The Research Project allows students to explore a topic of interest in depth, encouraging critical thinking and application of research skills. Skills for Midwifery Practice 3 and the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) module ensure students are fully prepared for the clinical responsibilities of a registered midwife. The program’s blend of theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and research engagement ensures graduates are equipped for modern midwifery practice.
