COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Mental Health Nursing program is structured over three years, progressively developing students’ academic knowledge, clinical skills, and professional values. In the first year, students are introduced to the core principles of mental health nursing through modules such as Introduction to Professional Values for Mental Health Nurses and Early Intervention to Optimise Mental Health and Wellbeing. They explore person-centred care approaches through Creative Interventions in Mental Health and build a foundational understanding of human biology with Fundamental Biosciences and Physical Health Care. Clinical skills are introduced early through Mental Health Nursing Practice: Part 1, which provides practical experience in real healthcare settings. In the second year, the focus shifts to more specialised knowledge and practice. Students learn about Service User Led Assessment, Care Planning and Recovery, enabling them to involve individuals in their own care journeys. Research for Mental Health Nurses introduces evidence-based practice, while Medication Management and Core Psychological Approaches and Counselling Skills further enhance their ability to deliver effective care. Mental Health Nursing Practice: Part 2 deepens their hands-on experience, fostering confidence in managing more complex clinical situations. The final year emphasizes leadership and advanced practice. Modules such as Leading and Managing Care in an Interprofessional Context and Politics and Contemporary Nursing Practice prepare students for senior roles within healthcare. The Dissertation module allows students to explore a relevant topic in depth, while Delivering Complex Care focuses on managing multifaceted needs in clinical practice. Mental Health Nursing Practice: Part 3 ensures students are fully prepared for transition into professional roles, consolidating all theoretical and practical learning from the program. This comprehensive structure ensures graduates are ready to deliver compassionate, evidence-based care and respond to the evolving needs of individuals and communities in mental health settings.
