COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Therapy degree is structured across three years, focusing on building the theoretical foundation, clinical competence, and professional readiness required for registration with the General Dental Council. In the first year, students are introduced to core concepts through modules such as Introduction to Professional Practice and Pre-Clinical Dental Sciences. These are complemented by Clinical Skills Development 1 and Clinical Practice, where students begin developing essential hands-on skills in a controlled clinical environment. This early exposure to practical experience ensures students understand the principles of dental hygiene and therapy from the outset.In the second year, learning is expanded with more advanced topics. Dental Sciences deepens knowledge of oral biology and pathology, while Clinical Skills Development 2 enhances technical capabilities. Dentistry in Society 1 encourages students to consider broader societal and public health perspectives in oral care. Research Skills for Oral Health equips students with the ability to understand and conduct research, a key component in evidence-based practice.The third year integrates all learning into a professional framework. Dentistry in Society 2 continues the exploration of the dental profession’s role in public health. The Oral Health Dissertation provides an opportunity for students to apply research skills to an area of personal or professional interest. Preparing for Professional Practice focuses on readiness for the workforce, covering legal, ethical, and professional expectations. Integrated Clinical Practice allows students to demonstrate competence in a wide range of procedures through real-world clinical experience. Altogether, the course ensures graduates are clinically skilled, research-informed, and professionally prepared to begin a successful career as dental hygienists and therapists within both the NHS and private sectors.
