COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminology degree at the University of Suffolk offers a structured and comprehensive curriculum designed to develop both theoretical understanding and practical skills relevant to the study of crime and justice. The year also includes a historical perspective through the History of Crime & Punishment, helping students understand how crime and responses to it have evolved over time.In the second year, students deepen their understanding through core modules such as Criminological Theory, Policing, Criminal Justice, Law for Criminologists, and Social Theory. The module Understanding Research equips students with essential skills to critically evaluate evidence, while Contemporary Issues in Criminology and Youth Crime and Justice allow them to apply this knowledge to modern social challenges. The World of Work module helps students prepare for employment by exploring career options and professional development.In the final year, students undertake an Independent Project, allowing them to conduct in-depth research on a criminological topic of their choice. Additional modules such as Penology, Victimology, Drugs, Crime and Society, and Rehabilitation of Offenders provide specialist insights into various aspects of criminal behaviour and the justice system. The Forensic Psychology module bridges criminology with psychology, offering a more detailed view of criminal behaviour and mental health. Students also develop quantitative skills through Data Analysis and Visualisation for Social Scientists, enhancing their ability to interpret and communicate data effectively.
