COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Children’s Nursing degree at the University of Suffolk is structured over three years, combining academic learning with practical experience to prepare students for a fulfilling career in paediatric nursing. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of children’s nursing through modules such as Introduction to Professional Values for Children’s Nursing and Family and Child-Centred Care, which emphasise ethical practice and the importance of involving families in healthcare. Promoting the Health and Well-being of Children introduces public health principles, while Paediatric Biosciences 1 covers the essential anatomy and physiology related to child health. Clinical experience is integrated through Children’s Nursing Practice Part 1, which allows students to apply their learning in real-world settings.In the second year, the course builds on these foundations with a focus on more complex healthcare needs. The Child with Complex Needs explores long-term conditions and multidisciplinary care. Children’s Mental Health Care addresses the emotional and psychological aspects of nursing, while Paediatric Bioscience II focuses on the care of acutely unwell children. Research for Children’s Nursing develops students’ understanding of evidence-based practice. Children’s Nursing Practice Part 2 continues to enhance clinical competence through varied placement experiences.The final year prepares students for professional registration and leadership in practice. Modules such as Leading and Managing Care in Children's Nursing and Medication Management equip students with the skills needed to coordinate care and ensure safe medication use. Managing the Deteriorating Child provides advanced training in recognising and responding to urgent health concerns. The Dissertation module allows students to explore a topic of interest in depth, demonstrating academic and research skills. Children’s Nursing Practice Part 3 provides the final stage of clinical placement, ensuring students are confident, capable, and ready to enter the workforce as registered children’s nurses.
